Creating Blackouts and Whiteouts

Last Updated -

This article is for: Programming Directors, station technicians.
Using: Ando Console, Station Manager/RAS Adapter.
Task: Learn how to create blackouts and whiteouts.

A blackout is used when a segment of terrestrial audio is not allowed to be streamed, such as when there is a major sporting event and the station is not allowed to stream the event to local listeners. When you create a blackout you have the option of inserting filler (alternative) content or creating silence during that time period.

A whiteout is used when you want to allow all of your terrestrial audio to pass through to the stream – essentially blocking the stream ads from being inserted for a period of time.

There are two types of blackout and whiteout:

  • Triggered by Data. When the injector waits for a specific cart from the automation system.| Data from the automation system begins and ends the event.
  • Time triggered. When the event is triggered according to start and end timing triggers that you specify.

A number of different tools can be used to trigger blackouts and whiteouts. The items below list the various tools and types, and each includes a link to a training document (PDF) that describes the method for creating a blackout or whiteout of that type. Find the item that applies to your tools and what you want to accomplish, and download that PDF for full instructions.

IMPORTANT!

Creating blackouts and whiteouts involves multiple variables, so it can take some practice to get it right. We recommend you practice making very short blackouts and whiteouts during non-critical times in your streaming schedule in case they don't work the way you expect. For more mission-critical blackouts and whiteouts, you should involve the Customer Support team in planning and executing your first few events, until you feel capable of handling it on your own.

If You’re Using Ando Console with Injector Manager

Data-triggered Blackout

Data_triggered_blackout.pdf. This training document shows you how to create a server side (compatible with Tap) data based blackout using the Ando console. The steps involved are:

  • Create a custom template
  • Create a custom ad family
  • Upload content
  • Create a trigger to start the event
  • Create a new breakthrough trigger to end the blackout

Time-triggered Blackout

Timed_blackout.pdf. This training document shows you how to create a server side (compatible with Tap) timed blackout using the Ando console. The steps involved are:

  • Create a custom template
  • Create a custom ad family
  • Upload content
  • Create a trigger to start the event

Data-triggered Whiteout

Data-triggered-whiteout.pdf. This training document shows you how to create a data-triggered whiteout, compatible with Tap’s server side ad injection, using the Ando console. A whiteout allows all terrestrial content to play through to the stream, while stopping ad insertion for a set period of time. The steps involved are:

  • Create a custom template
  • Create a trigger to start the event
  • Create a new breakthrough trigger to end the whiteout

Time-triggered Whiteout

Timed_whiteout.pdf. This training guide shows you how to create a timed whiteout, compatible with Tap’s server side ad injection, using the Ando console. A whiteout allows all terrestrial content to play through to the stream, while stopping ad insertion at a set period of time. The steps involved are:

  • Create a Custom Template
  • Create a Trigger to Start the Event
