Get HLS links to work in iTunes

Last Updated -

This article is for: anyone using iTunes to listen to an HLS stream.
Using: iTunes (Mac or Windows).
Problem: HTTP streaming links fail when trying to listen to them in iTunes.

Apple iTunes can stream HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) links that are copied directly into iTunes, but you must use one of the Apple proprietary protocols, not the standard HTTP.

The Problem

You paste a station's HLS URL into the iTunes "Open Stream" URL box. The connection appears to be working, but no audio comes through. Whoops! You've used HTTP!

The Fix

In the HLS URL, replace http:// with itals://

For example:
No: http://playerservices.streamtheworld.com/api/livestream-redirect/CALLSIGNAAC.m3u8
Yes: itals://playerservices.streamtheworld.com/api/livestream-redirect/CALLSIGNAAC.m3u8

(In this example, "CALLSIGNAAC" is just an example station. Your actual HLS stream will contain different characters in that part of the URL.)
